The 33rd Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly on Thursday elected Nepal as a member of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2013-2015, the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations said.
The UN body is considered the most influential UN organ after the Security Council. It is responsible for coordinating economic and social activities of 14 UN specialised agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions. It looks after issues of sustainable development, MDGs and development of poorer countries.Nepal will now have more say in designing and implementing ECOSOC programmes, say officials.
"The Meeting elected 18 members for the Council from different regions. The other elected members from the Asia and the Pacific group are Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan," said the mission in a statement.
The result comes as officials at the mission in New York and Foreign Secretary Durga Prasad Bhattarai were busy convincing the UN General Assembly for a berth in the 54-member body.
