A NEWCASTLE pub operator has raised
£15,000 for a new school for children in Nepal.
The Head Of Steam, which runs The
Cluny in Ouseburn and The Central in Gateshead, among other pubs, has been
raising funds for the school in Mayum through the Pahar Trust Nepal charity.
Bike rides, charity gigs and raffles
have been among the events to drum up cash.
The company has now presented the
cheque to Howard Green, the chairman of the charity, at the Cluny. “It’s a
wonderful job The Head Of Steam Ltd has done, particularly Dave Campbell at The
Central and Julian Ive at The Cluny, and their staff, to raise the £15,000
needed to build a new school for Mayum, a village with about 70 children, in a
remote part of mountainous east Nepal,” said Mr Green.
Work on building the school is
expected to begin immediately.
Progress reports and photos will be
displayed at The Central as the project gets under way.
Staff will continue fundraising to
pay for furniture at the new school and for a new computer.
“We are in discussion with Gateshead
Council to twin a Gateshead school with the new school in Nepal” said Dave
Campbell, manager of The Central.
“There is a significant Nepalese
population in Gateshead, which will be really useful to help communication
between the two groups of children.
“Who knows – maybe there will be
visits of children between the schools in years to come.” (.chroniclelive.co.uk)
