Parties fails to choose consensus candidate for CA chair

KATHMANDU, Feb 17: The chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA) cum speaker of the Legislature Parliament is set to be elected through majority vote as per Article 71 (1 [A]), after the political parties representing in the CA failed to nominate consensus candidate, on Monday afternoon.

An all-party-meeting held at the CA building, New Baneshwor failed to agree on the single candidate this afternoon after UCPN (Maoist) and the UML staked their claim for the post.

“A total of 421 lawmakers are supporting for UML candidate Subas Nemabang for the post. Nembang will be elected as CA Chairman tomorrow,” said Jhalanath Khanal, UML Chairman, emerging from the meeting.

Also, talking to reporters, UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal reiterated its claim for the post.

“UCPN-Maoist, the third largest party, should get the post of CA Chairman as the UML, the third largest party in the previous CA, had bagged the post, “Dahal argued.

NC leader Purna Bahadur Khadka said that his party would vote for UML candidate Nembang in line with the seven-point agreement between the two parties.

The CA meeting on Sunday had scheduled the election of CA chairman for 5 pm Tuesday if parties failed to choose through consensus.
Earlier, the CA secretariat had called for nomination of consensus candidate for the post from 1 pm to 2 pm on Monday as per Article 71 (1) of the interim constitution.

CA secretariat will register candidacy for the majority process from 1 pm to 3 pm on Tuesday
