PM set to visit India next Friday

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is paying a state visit to India from April 6-8 at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Friday. This will be his maiden foreign trip after assuming the office on February 15 and will be in line with the tradition of Nepali PM visiting India first. ccompanied by his spouse Radhika Shakya, PM Oli will leave for India next Friday leading a government delegation comprising ministers, members of parliament, secretaries and other high-ranking officials of Nepal government, read a statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. During the visit, PM will hold official meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi and exchange views on matters of mutual interests. He will pay courtesy call on President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu. Some senior Cabinet members of Indian Government will call on PM Oli. Govt to provide official passports to chiefs of Municipality, Rural Municipality

The government has decided to provide diplomatic passports to province chiefs and chiefs of District Coordination Committee and official passports to chiefs of Municipality and Rural Municipality. A Cabinet meeting held on Monday made the decision to this effect. Similarly, the meeting has appointed Kundan Aryal as the press advisor of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Joshi will get facilities at par with senior government officials. Likewise, Achyut Mainali has been appointed as the public relation advisor. He will get facilities at par with the state minister. The meeting has also decided to extend the term of 13 colonels of Nepal Army by two years. EU’s report undermined Nepal: PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the recommendations and conclusions of the report of the European Union’s Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) on the recently concluded elections of the House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies have undermined Nepal and Nepali people. He said so during a programme organised to present the National Election Observation Committee's Final Report of the Observation Mission in the Capital on Sunday. “I thought the EU will revise the contents of the report, but it defended its recommendations for the election commission,'  he said, adding, “I, as a Prime Minister of a sovereign country, say that the report must be revised.” Saying that no one should question the election participated by 80 percent of the citizens of a nation whose 15 percent citizens are abroad, PM Oli asked, “Are the 80 percent cast their votes without any knowledge?” Likewise, PM Oli said that no one should undermine the achievements of Nepali...

Nepal secure ODI status

Spin twins Sandeep Lamichhane and Dipendra Airee helped Nepal sweep aside Papua New Guinea by six wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-off in Harare. Nepal have gained ODI status for the first time in their history after defeating Papua New Guinea by six wickets in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-off at Old Hararians Sports Club. Nepal's bowlers laid the platform for the comprehensive win, with Sandeep Lamichhane and Dipendra Airee taking four wickets apiece to dismiss their opponents for 114 in just 27.2 overs. It was another disappointing batting display from PNG, who have now been bowled out for 200 or fewer in four of their five matches in the competition. The defeat confirms they will lose their ODI status.

Plane crash probe team begins work

The investigation team formed to probe into the US-Bangla airplane crash in the capital began its work today.  "The probe team has already go into action, and the investigation will move ahead in collaboration with international research agencies, as it involves an international flight," said Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Suresh Acharya at a press conference held by the Tribhuvan International Airport Civil Aviation Office today. Former Secretary Yagya Prasad Gautam leads a six-member probe team formed by the government following the crash on Monday. Acharya also shared that the aircraft manufacturer company in Canada and the Bangladeshi Civil Aviation Authorities have been informed about the matter, with many international experts likely to be involved in the investigation. Judicial Council relieves Chief Justice Parajuli

The Judicial Council on Wednesday relieved Chief Justice (CJ) Gopal Prasad Parajuli of the top post of judiciary citing he has crossed the retirement age based on his citizenship and academic certificates.    Judicial Council (JC) Secretariat today announced that Parajuli has already retired on age ground. A letter signed by Judicial Council Secretary Nripdhoj Niraula and submitted to Parajuli has confirmed that the CJ retired on August 5, 2017. “According to a secretary level decision of March 14, 2018, we inform that respectable Gopal Prasad Parajuli no longer remains in the post of Chief Justice as he has crossed the retirement age of 65 on August 5, 20017,” read the letter issued by JC Secretary Niraula.  The letter has stated that the decision was made based on Parajuli’s citizenship at the secretariat, his academic qualifications, details and letter received from Examination Controller’s Office in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur. काठमाडौँ — न्याय परिषद सचिवालयले प्रधानन्यायाधीश गोपालप्रसाद पराजुलीलाई अवकाश भइसकेको जानकारी गराएको छ । सचिव नृपध्वज निरौलले हस्ताक्षर गरी पराजुलीलाई बुझाएको पत्रमा २०७४ साउन २१ गते नै अवकाश भइसकेको जानकारी दिइएको छ । पत्रमा भनिएको छ, '...सम्माननीय महोदयको ६५ (पैसट्ठी) वर्षको उमेर २०७४।४।२१ मा नै पुरा भईसकेको देखिन आएकोले आज मिति २०७४।११।३० को सचिवस्तरिय निर्णय अनुसार सम्माननीय महोदय पदमा नरहनु भएको जानकारी गराउँदछु।' पत्रमा न्याय परिषद्ले पराजुलीको परिषद सचिवालयमा रहेको नागरिकता, शैक्षिक योग्यता, विवरण तथा परीक्षा नियन्त्रण कार्यालय सानोठिमी भक्तपुरबाट बुधबार प्राप्त पत्रको आधारमा समेतको आधार उक्त निर्णय लिइएको उल्लेख छ।

Prez Bhandari re-elected for second term

Bidya Devi Bhandari has been re-elected as the President of Nepal for a second term on Tuesday.  In the election held today, Bhandari, the left alliance candidate, was elected with more than a two-thirds majority. Bhandari mustered 39,275 votes while her rival candidate Kumari Laxmi Rai, of the main opposition Nepali Congress, garnered 11,730 votes, EC Spokesperson Nawaraj Dhakal said. CPN-UML leader Bhandari was elected as the first woman President of Nepal for the first time on October 28, 2015 by defeating Kul Bahadur Gurung of Nepali Congress.

49 Dead in US-Bangla plane crash (UPDATE)

Forty Nine people died when a US-Bangla airlines plane crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon, Nepal Police confirmed. There were 71 people including four crew members on board the 78-seater Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft that took off from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The plane crashed at 2:18 pm local time.  31 bodies were pulled out from the crashed plane and  others were declared dead at different hospitals, police said. 22 injured passengers were sent to different hospitals for treatment. TIA said there were 37 males, 27 females and two child onboard the aircraft. There were 33 Nepali passengers.

KATHMANDU, Nepal — A passenger plane from Bangladesh slammed into an empty field and caught fire just short of the runway at the airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Monday, and officials feared many of the plane’s 67 passengers were dead. Huge, dark gray columns of smoke uncoiled from the field as rescuers tried to save as many people as possible from the burning wreckage. The plane, US-Bangla Airlines Flight 211, was landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on a flight from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, when it crashed at 2:15 p.m. Witnesses said it was wobbling in the air and seemed unbalanced as it approached. The tail slammed into the ground, and fire erupted at the rear of the plane. “It sounded like a bomb went off,” said Kailash Adhikari, a driver for a fuel company working at the Kathmandu airport. He said it took 15 minutes for firefighters to put out the flames.

India to support for reconstruction of 50,000 houses

Kathmandu, March 8 : The Government of India is supporting reconstruction of 50,000 houses in earthquake affected districts of Gorkha and Nuwakot. An agreement to this end was signed today between the Indian government, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in order to expedite the post-earthquake reconstruction process of Nepal. The government of India would provide 16.2 million US dollar for the same. The government of India is partnering with the UNDP and UNOPS for providing Socio-Technical Facilitation to 26,912 home owners in Gorkha and 23,088 home owners in Nuwakot districts, respectively.  Socio-technical team from UNDP and UNOPS would assist home owners to reconstruct their homes as per the Government of Nepal's earthquake resistant norms.
