In an interaction programme organised on Friday by
the Nepal Engineers' Association in the aftermath of the deadly
earthquake in the country to discuss its damages and post-disaster
scenario, the participants talked about the importance of preparedness
and public awareness on building code to avert earthquake-related
damages.
National Planning Commission former Vice Chair Jagdish Chandra Pokharel said preparedness and alertness were the best ways to remain safe at the time of natural disasters. He said essentiality of open space in every locality in the Kathmandu valley has been realised following the recent earthquake.
Former secretary and president of Society of Nepali Architects Kishor Thapa stated that although multi-storey buildings were the part of urbanisation, building code must to be strictly followed while constructing them.
Deputy Director General of Urban Development and Building Construction Department Shivahari Sharma shared at the programme that rapid assessment of earthquake-caused damages to public houses was already over and the demolition of inhabitable houses was going on with cooperation of experts concerned.
Earthquake expert Jitendra Gotra and building construction expert Rajesh Dhakal emphasised the construction of earthquake resistant structures by conducting soil testing to mitigate possible risks.
